Notes:

The ancestry and maiden name of Lucy is not known with any certainty. But there are a few clues.

She was born circa 1798 in Vermont, according to the 1850 and 1860 census. It is tempting to think that she must have married Curtis by 1829, when their presumed son Horace was born. But it is possible that Horace was the son of an earlier wife of Curtis.

The earliest documentary evidence that Lucy was the spouse of Curtis found to date (2021) is a deed dated 16 June 1845, in which Curtis and his wife Lucy sold land to Isaac Potter in Jackson (Jackson County deed 16:207). No earlier Jackson County land records in which Curtis is grantor have been found.

Another reference to Lucy Wheelock is found in a list of members of the First Congregational Curch of Jackson, Michigan, dated October 1846. She was "United" 7 March 1841, born in Cornall, VT, "Converted" in Royalton, NY.¹ This is consistent with the census records, which indicate she was born in Vermont. But Horace and Curtis Wheelock were early members of the Baptist church in Jackson.²

The 1850 and 1860 census may provide another clue. A Mary D. Sherwood was living in the household of Curtis and Lucy in Jackson, Michigan, in 1850. She was 25 years old, born NY. Mary Sherwood married Amasa Foster in Jackson Co, 30 Nov 1854.³ Curtis died in 1859, after which his widow, Lucy, was living with Mary and Amasa Foster, in Liberty, Jackson Co, MI, in 1860. Clearly Lucy had a relationship with Mary D. (Sherwood) Foster.

Mary Foster died by suicide 15 May 1868. The Michigan death record identifies her father as _____ Sherwood, deceased, and her mother as Lucy Sherwood, deceased.⁴

Perhaps Lucy Wheelock was Mary Foster's mother. If so, she would have given birth to Mary around 1825, presumably in NY, where the census records indicate Mary was born.

A family tree at FamilySearch.org indicates that Mary Delight (Sherwood) Foster was the daughter of Jesse Sherwood, b. 14 Oct 1799 in Williamstown, MA, d. 12 Oct 1846 in Royalton, Niagara Co, NY, and Lucy Mead, born ca. 1795 in Cornwall, Addison Co, VT. This sounds promising, but the death date for Jesse doesn't fit. Lucy was known to have married Curtis by 1845 (per deed cited above), but her husband Jesse hadn't yet died. It could be a different Lucy, but there is reason to doubt the 1846 death date of Jesse. The document cited by the FamilySearch.org group sheet actually lists a death date of 12 Oct 1833 in one place, and 12 Oct 1846 in another.⁵ No Niagara County, NY, probate or land records could be found to validate the death date of Jesse Sherwood.

In sum, it is possible that the wife of Curtis is Lucy (Mead) (Sherwood) Wheelock, born ca. 1798 in Cornwall, Addison Co, Vermont, died before 15 May 1868, when she is called "deceased" in her daughter's death record. If so, then she would have married Curtis after her husband died in 1833, assuming the 1833 date is correct. Therefore, a different woman must have given birth to Horace, who was born in 1829, implying that Curtis had a wife prior to Lucy.
